Virtual YG for those who were registered for regular YG

As all of you are already aware, this year’s West Virginia Youth Government has unfortunately been canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and resulting social distancing policies. Hundreds of students have already put in many hours of work drafting bills, briefs, and preparing for what was promised to be an exhilarating and educational event.
Because of the efforts of our students, and YLA’s continued commitment to provide programs even during these unprecedented times, we are proud to announce this year’s West Virginia Youth in Government will be restructured into a two day “virtual” event.
The logistics for our event are still being finalized, but here are the key details you need to know:
  • YG Virtual will be held Friday, May 15th starting at 4pm, and Saturday, May 16th starting at 10am.
  • Virtual YG will be open to any previously registered participants. We need everyone interested in participating to complete a simple re-registration process, which can be found here.
  • The deadline to complete the re-registration process is Tuesday, May 12th at 5pm. If participants do not complete the process in time they will be unable to attend YG Virtual.
  • YG Virtual will be conducted via the Zoom remote conferencing service.
  • More information will be released in the coming days via FacebookInstagram, and our website, https://yla-youthleadership.org/.
We’re sure there will be a lot of questions leading up to the event, and YLA is planning on making all information available as soon as possible. If you do have any pressing questions, feel free to email tony@yla-youthleadership.org.
Thank You! We’re looking forward to seeing you at the “virtual” State Capitol in a few short weeks!
Sincerely,
Tony Antonini
YLA District Director

  • All of this has changed as a result of the news from Friday to cancel schools.

Camp Horseshoe Camps - Scholarships are available.
Youth Leadership Association of WV/Ohio has Camp Horseshoe in Tucker County.  There are several camps you can participate in.  The first is the Teen Entrepreneurship Summit, second is the Senior Leadership Summit, and finally Youth Opportunity Camp.

The first camp is  Teen Entrepreneurship Summit to be held on June 7-13.  The week-long experience includes workshops, visits to small businesses, outdoor team-building experiences, and other activities.  Grafton High School has 2 $290 scholarships available for this event.  Students would only need to pay $75.  Let Mr. Zukowski know if you would like to attend.

The second camp is the Senior Leadership Summit taking place on June 14-20.  There will be teens there to learn leadership skills to benefit the local YLA clubs as well as their communities.  The Grafton Lions Club is providing a full scholarship to one GHS student to attend.  Let Mr. Zukowski know if you would like to attend.

Last of all, it the Youth Opportunity Camp for children ages 7-12.   This camp is available to serve disadvantaged children in one-week installments starting June 28 to July 25.  Many high school students have volunteered at this camp for a week or two, especially after they have attended a previous camp.  If you would like to volunteer free of charge, see Mr. Zukowski.

There are many opportunities available this summer at Camp Horseshoe.

Grafton YLA Update for Janaury 24

Happy New Year!

We had a meeting today to update YLA members of happenings in the organization and to plan for the future.

Last Friday was the Chili Cookoff and $401.92 was raised for the Taylor County Humane Society.  We will have a check presentation during AA assembly on Tuesday, February 4.

We also talked about Youth in Government.  It is imperative that everyone works on their bills/cases as soon as possible.  If you need ideas, see Mr. Zukowski.  Also, you will need to pay the final fees online by the first week of February.

We talked about having a car show and a canned food drive.  We have permission to have a Teacher Pageant prior to Spring Break.

Have a great weekend!
