Part of the role of the Grafton High YLA organization is to have students volunteer and take part in community events. On Christmas Even in Flemington, Mr. Zukowski and Caitlin took part in such an activity.
The Flemington Lions Club organizes a Christmas Eve Luminary every year. This year, the Lions Club was short handed to set up the luminaries. The luminaries are made up of a gallon milk jug that has a hole cut into it's side to place a candle in it. Caitlin had volunteered to help out with setting up the luminaries. Over the period of two hours, Mr. Zukowski and Caitlin had set up 100 luminaries, cleaned up corn stalks from Flemington Days in September, and then lit up the 100 candles.
Not all the luminaries survived a long time due to some candles being too tall and they lit the containers they were in and a few hours later, all the luminaries were extinguished due to a rainstorm that took place that evening.
It is a goal of members of Grafton's YLA organization to volunteer with other community groups and support their goals and mission.
This blog is designed to give information to Grafton High School Students who participate in the YLA organization.

Working on Bills or Court Cases
If you are staying after school to work with Mr. Zukowski for your court case or bill project, please make prior arrangements with Mr. Zukowski. You are welcome to come up to the room at 7:30 in the morning.
Everyone needs to have their projects done by the end of January. You need to be working on it over Christmas break and then finalize it in January. If you start on it later, there will be bound to be snow days and you won't have the time in school to perfect it.
You will find information at this website: https://www.yla-youthleadership.org/YG.html
We will not be meeting this week.
Email to rzukowsk@k12.wv.us if you want to contact Mr. Zukowski over break.
Have a great Christmas break

Grafton High YLA at 2014 YLA Fall Conference
YLA's Fall Conference took place at Cedar Lakes on the weekend of November 14-16. Two students from GHS and an alumnus from our program participated.
The theme this weekend was "Leaders and Followers" which started with an interpretive actor playing Harriet Tubman and her role in the Underground Railroad.
Through the weekend, there was also a social gathering and variety show for participants to show off their talents. There were also discussions of how YLA Clubs can improve their clubs about setting goals and going through with the goals, participating in Model United Nations, and participating in Youth in Government.
It was a great time for all.

News from October 30!
Happy Halloween!
As we get ready for Halloween, we are also preparing to go to Fall Conference at Cedar Lakes on the weekend of November 14. Mr. Zukowski, Corrin, and Erin are all attending. Others are welcome to attend.
It sounds like our Judicial team is set for Youth in Government and we'll just have to wait until January when the case comes in to prepare. Hopefully that group will be able to find a local attorney that can help them out.
Most of the YG Legislative partners have been formed. Please start scheduling times after school to meet with Mr. Zukowski to get your bills started.
On ideas of fundraising, we talked about a WVU basket to raffle off, a (product) bingo, and even tickets to a WVU basketball game. If you have any connections or any ideas to help out with this, let us know next week.
Have a great week.
